Each drawing object in OpenOffice is inserted into one and only one layer. By default, all the "Layout" layer is open and all new objects are inserted to the "Layout" layer.

You can follow this tutorial to manage object-layer relation:

1. Insert a new object into a specific layer.

  • Click the layer name in the layer tab bar below the editing area to open the desired layer.
  • Add the new object. It will be inserted into the selected layer.

2. Identify the containing layer of a specific object.

  • Select and highlight the object.
  • Read the object location in the status bar. The containing layer name in parentheses. For example: "Slide 2/2 (Front)" show that "Front" is the containing layer name.

3. Move a object to a different layer.

  • Select and highlight the object.
  • Press Ctrl-X to cut the object from its current layer.
  • Click the target layer name in layer tab bar to open the target layer.
  • Press Ctrl-V to paste the object into the target layer.
