A

An IP (Internet Protocol) gateway is a special host that is connected to two or more IP local networks and performs IP routing task.

For example, the following diagram represents 3 hosts connected into 2 local networks.

IP Gateway - Intersection of Networks
IP Gateway - Intersection of Networks (techtutsonline.com)

3 hosts in the above diagram are:

  • Host_A - Identified as "192.168.0.2" and is part of Network X.
  • Host_B - Identified as "192.168.1.2" and is part of Network Y.
  • Gateway - Identified as "192.168.0.1" and "192.168.1.1" and is part of Network X and Network Y.

2 networks in the above diagram are:

  • Network X - Identified as "192.168.0.***" and connecting Host_A and Gateway.
  • Network Y - Identified as "192.168.1.***" and connecting Host_B and Gateway.

If Host_A wants to send a message to Host_B, Host_A must deliver the message to Gateway first. Gateway then must forward the message to Host_B as part of its IP routing task.
